The Digital Gyre

A world made of the unused digital detritus, The Digital Gyre is a collaboration between Parc Office, FarzinFarzin, and IrisVR, which examines the meanings of digital design assets when they are no longer being used.

The Digital Gyre is a VR experience that debuted at the 7th Architecture and Design Film Festival. Using the video game engine Unity, Parc Office assembled a series of unbuilt, 3D architectural models into a virtual gyre. The result is a swirling mass of discarded, unloved, half-remembered models that can be explored using Oculus Rift. As viewers explore structures within the Digital Gyre, architects explain the memories and feelings they associate with the discarded models. Eventually, the structures degrade to pithily remind viewers that the gyre is composed of digital trash.
